GLOBAL FEMALE CONDOM DAY BREAKFAST MEETING

This year, MCDF celebrated its second annual Global Female Condom Day on the 16th of September by organizing a breakfast meeting for all the stakeholders at the the Sarova Panafric Hotel in Nairobi, Kenya. This was in partnership with Support Worldwide, United Nations Populations Fund (UNFPA), The National AIDS Control Council (NACC) and The National AIDS and STIs Control Program (NASCOP)

The meeting was well attended by private sectors, Non governmental organizations  and the government bodies.

Among the key speakers were Hon. Joyce Emanikor, Turkana County's Woman Member of the National Assembly, and a representative from the Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA)

She highlighted that despite her county having a high prevalence in HIV/AIDS, very few measures are being taken to educate the community on prevention methods and how to use condoms correctly. For instance, in Turkana, women use the inner ring of the female condom as bangles while the men say it is very convenient to carry tobacco or even water when they take their herd to graze.

Prof. Orago, NACC Director also spoke at the meeting, and insisted on parents taking more control in educating their children on sexual matters.

Other speakers included Dr. Emmy Chesire, Senior HIV Prevention Adviser at NACC, Dr. George Githuka, MARPs (Most at Risk Persons) Programs Manager and Japheth Nyambane, Technical Advisor, Behaviour Chance Communication at NASCOP.

    Quite successful day for Muthaa Foundation and all stakeholders as we look to advocate and lobby for an increase in the number of Female condoms in the country.
    Women must be empowered in HIV preventions efforts, and its starts by making sure that the Female condoms are available and accessible to them.

    The message was clear,Women need to embrace Female Condom since its the only tool that assures them of dual protection and also give them confidence to negotiate for safer sex with their partners.With 6.9% HIV prevalence among women in comparison to 4.9% among men is a clear indicator that women need to take things into their own hands and negotiate for safer sex, also as a country we will be able to do away with 465,000 abortions reported in the recent research and this can only be achieved if we advocate for correct and consistent use of the female and male condoms.
